No thanks Women’s Health, I already have a bikini body

The Coolest Off Road Race You’ve Never Heard About

Ella Mae Loves Elvis

A heavily edited version of a video starring little Ella Mae is floating around on Facebook right now thanks to Perez Hilton. After a bit of research I found the original on YouTube which was published by her dad, Billy, on July 7, 2013. I am struck at how this infant was not only sang along despite her limited vocabulary but thoroughly enjoyed American Trilogy by Elvis Presley. She reminds me of little kids in church with their hands raised during Praise and Worship time. The video has had over 6.8 million views and they met Lisa Marie Presley that same year. There’s no way to tell if Ella Mae will still be into the classics a decade from now but we can certainly hope that she will.

September Shape Up 2014: Getting Back in the Saddle

In 2012 Holly Perkins launched the September Shape Up program on Facebook. The schedule was based on her Fitness 360 DVD featuring a mix of cardio, strength training and yoga. At the time, I was exercising almost every day and used it to take my fitness level up a notch. This time around, I’m training for the Rolex 5K yet again and want to maintain momentum during the colder months, which is something I’ve failed to do in recent years. Although I’m admittedly and shamefully not that good at dealing with heat anymore, I’m still a Caribbean girl at heart so when the temperature drops, all I want to do is cuddle under fluffy blankets and watch Christmas movies on Hallmark while drinking too much sugary tea. However if I want to be ready for that 5K in January, then running in the cold will have to be conquered, and I want to be ready. My regular readers are familiar with my obsession with that race. I trained for months only to get terribly sick and couldn’t run it in 2013. This year I was nursing a sore knee and did the fun walk instead but watching the sun rising on that asphalt only made me want to run even more. By the Grace of God, I’m going to run the 5K in 2015! Increase Your Aptitude For Fun with Co-Optitude on Geek & Sundry

Co-Optitude is my favourite show on the Geek & Sundry YouTube channel. The basic premise is that siblings Felicia and Ryon Day play video games that they weren’t allowed to have as children. We watch as they play, argue and of course, cheat their way through classic and lesser-known titles from the early days of gaming. I’ve binge-watched the whole series using the DirectTV YouTube app. Each episode is about fifteen minutes long so it’s not that big of an achievement, but my sister swears that I’m obsessed. Truthfully they remind me of how noisy and ridiculous I am when playing games. I’ve been known to shout at the screen, throw tantrums and forget about everything when I play. That last bit is why I wasn’t allowed to have a gaming console either.

No thanks Women’s Health, I already have a bikini body

I was reading an article on the Women’s Health Magazine website when a pop-up window, well, popped up. Nothing seemed odd because many websites have pop-ups asking visitors to subscribe for emails, social media links, store coupons, etc. etc. etc. This one offered their 21-Day Bikini Body Plan. Thanks but no thanks, Women’s Health because I already have a plan. I looked for the ‘x’ in the top right-hand corner but there wasn’t one. You see, the only way to get rid of the box was to either give them my email address or click, “No thanks, I already have a bikini body.” Good grief, I’m on the site looking the pop-up right now! Here’s a screenshot with the link circled in blue.

The Coolest Off Road Race You’ve Never Heard About

Have you ever heard of the Rallye Aïcha Des Gazelles? Probably not and that’s unfortunate because it’s a truly special event, but don’t feel too bad (after I made you feel bad). I only discovered its existence a few months ago through preparation for an interview with Emme Hall, who’s the driver half of the Indiana Joans. She officially became a Gazelle by participating in the race in 2013. We chatted for My Life at Speed before she headed to Africa for this year’s race. I was determined to follow their progress and try to tell as many people as possible about this event.

The Rallye Aïcha Des Gazelles is a multi-day off road race in the Moroccan Sahara with only female competitors. That’s right, it’s a race made by a woman, for women. Unlike legendary races like the Dakar rally, the fastest don’t always win because their main goal is to take routes that log the shortest distances between checkpoints. To further benefit the Moroccan people, the Coeur des Gazelles provide health services for remote villages along the way. It’s all very interesting and you can find out what it’s really like to be a Gazelle in my interview with Emme and co-driver, Sabrina Howells and how we can help them go back in 2015: http://mylifeatspeed.com/racing-in-morocco-with-the-indiana-joans/.
