Love Child Documentary on HBO

What is internet addiction? The answer is clearly described in the documentary film, Love Child. It recounts the story of a South Korean couple that allowed their baby to starve to death because of their obsession with an MMORPG called Prius Online. The film explains how South Korea as a country worked hard to make itself into a digital powerhouse with a massive gaming industry. The unfortunate tale of baby Sa-rang is told simply and empathically but never feels exploitative. The sad irony is that Prius Online players were given a completely dependent companion called an Anima, who must be cared for and nurtured within the game.

I couldn’t help about how much time I spend online and what I’m sacrificing in my actual life in favour of staring at a computer screen. Is this really the best way to spend our days? Am I doing something in the digital world that I can positively look back on in six to twelve months? Life is too short and this documentary teaches us that there is no reset button for our lives. Love Child is now playing on HBO and On Demand.
