My Fitness Revolution: Days 207 to 211

The past five days have been in a word: great.  As I mentioned in the last post, my sister is now working out with me.  It’s very exciting to see her progress.  She’s a real trooper and we’re not competitive at all but very supportive of each other.  This is a surprise since we’re both highly competitive people.  However, we’re more interested in fitness goal achievement, rather than who does it first.  She successfully completed Week 1 of Robert Ullrey’s C25K Podcast, and on Day 208 did the entire Arm Circuit with Holly Perkins along with The Jane Fonda Workout Record (1982).  Her son wants to play football (soccer) this summer and just started the program.  Unlike us, he’s a teenager and has no soreness worth mention.  What a lucky bug!

I’ve completed Week 4 of the running podcast on Day 209 but not without some difficulty.  It was particularly strenuous and left me with stiff calves.  I rubbed liniment and wore thick pants to keep them warm.  Eventually I resorted to painkillers but that was just a temporary fix.  Since my last rest day was Day 184, I decided to take it easy on Day 210; and just did the Arm Circuit with Holly Perkins and Miss Jane’s Warm-Up.  There will be a proper rest day on Day 216 because it will be May 31stand I never work on that day.  Before I ran on Day 211, I used Biofreeze Pain Relieving Gel on my calves and it worked very well.  The precaution was necessary because it was the Day 1 of Week 5.  Yes, Day 1 because unlike the previous podcasts, each day is structured differently.  By its end, I should be able to run for twenty minutes non-stop.  After that treadmill session, I shall be happy for the rest day.  I still wear wrist weights during the runs but don’t use the hand weights any more.  There isn’t much time for those particular arm movements and I’d prefer to stand on solid ground for reps with the 5lb hand weights.  The 2lb pair is a bit too light for me now.

The big question is if there’s been any weight loss?  I must admit that while my trousers fit a bit better and my arms are much stronger, there is hesitation to jump on the scale.  However, fear is the mind-killer so on June 1stI’ll take the plunge and weigh myself.  Luckily, I don’t foresee any drastic reduction and won’t be disappointed.  It is my sincere belief that the scale does not adequately quantify my fitness level.  To fit into my favourite pair of jeans on the other hand, would be magnificent.  Weight loss is a benefit of optimal fitness.  It’s not bad to have as a goal but we should never get so obsessed that our health becomes endangered.  Portion control and smarter snack choices may be a further end-game but we will be healthier.  That’s what’s truly important.  No retreat, no surrender and no excuses!
