The One About The Race I Missed

It’s true, my friends.  I didn’t run the Daytona 5K for the same reason that you haven’t heard from me since last week.  Last Tuesday, I had a successful treadmill session that covered 2.5 miles although my Nike+ running app went crazy after a recent software update and didn’t record the run correctly.  I followed up with pull-ups, push-ups and dips using the Iron Gym Xtreme Workout Bar.  It wasn’t just a successful workout but an invigorating one.  The next day I was busy with some stuff for My Life at Speed and didn’t exercise but didn’t think anything of it because the workout had been so good the day before.  Then on Thursday, it hit me – a massive sinus attack!

Motivation

There was a time when sinus trouble was just an accepted part of my existence.  However, I haven’t had this problem for years until last week.  It crept up with a runny nose and some grogginess, but went from being a nuisance to a problem when I stepped onto the treadmill.  I decided to do a two-mile incline walk just to stay active before the race; but had to stop after only half a mile because of the intense pain in my sinuses.  In fact, my right eyeball felt like it was burning and there was intense pain.  That was when the chances of running the 5K had become very slim.  I took a hot shower and bundled up for the night with the hope that a good night’s sleep would help.  It did not.  The next day, I realised that the combination of cold early morning temperature and inflamed nasal passages would make me terribly ill, which I refused to risk.

Terrible, terrible sinus pain cut this workout short.

Friday night was a tormented one.  I was so guilty about skipping the 5K and still hoped to make a marvellous recovery in time to do it.  As fate would have it, I woke up early Saturday morning and the way I felt convinced me that the right decision had been made.  I took Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Cough which helped me a bit.  By the way, it tastes terrible which is the earmark of all effective medication.  A few hours later I crawled out of bed and got ready to head to Daytona International Speedwayfor the Rolex 24.  That involved a lot of walking.  Ahem, a whooooole lot of walking!  The sinus irritation didn’t disappear completely but didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the afternoon’s activities.  Also, I was able to walk all the way up the Sprint Tower and hardly felt it except for the sinus issues.  Alka-Seltzer Plus Severe Sinus Congestion & Cough’s daytime liquid gel capsules helped me to cope very well.  Oh, and on a purely vain note, I was wearing clothes that wouldn’t fit me a year ago.  Hooray for fashion rediscoveries!

That night I took the night time capsules and goodness, they were strong!  It’s been a very long time since an over-the-counter medication made me feel so utterly out of control.  I didn’t go sleepwalking or anything but was uncoordinated.  You definitely don’t operate heavy machinery after taking those green capsules.  This week I’m going to slowly get back into workouts.  I tried to be a good girl, but have indulged in sodas and tea with brown sugar lately.  My taste buds have been muffled and the tea is the only drink that helps me cope with the stuffiness.  January has always been a tough month and I was hoping to get a handle on it this time around.  It hasn’t been too bad but certainly wasn’t what I’d call a success.  Here’s to better behaviour in February.  No retreat, no surrender and no excuses!  (My Fitness Revolution: Days 452 to 458)
